Heat Stress

What are the provisions of the legislation in Cyprus, regulating Heat Stress of Workers?

  1. The protection of workers from heat stress is regulated through the Safety and Health at Work legislation and specifically the Safety and Health at Work (Code of Practice for the Protection of Workers from Heat Stress) Order of 2014 (PI 291/2014).
  2. In every case, according to the Safety and Health at Work Laws of 1996 to 2015 where workers are likely to be exposed to high heat stress during their work, employers and self-employed persons are required to take all necessary organizational and technical prevention and protection measures by assessing the risks of heat stress.
  3. According to the provisions of the above Order, both employers and self-employed persons should measure, at each work place, the parameters that contribute to the heat stress, such as air temperature and relative humidity, and / or monitor weather reports and forecasts of the Meteorological Department and accordingly regulate their work, including the interruption or postponement of the time of work in the place where they carry out activities.
  4. Table No 12 of the above Order determines the percentage rate of work and breaks for rest as well as work interruption depending on the measurements of air temperature and relative humidity and the type of work (e.g. heavy or light work).
