3. Safety Data Sheets

The requirements for the compilation of the Safety Data Sheets are specified in the European Regulation (EU) 830/2015 which amends Annex II of REACH Regulation.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are the main tool for ensuring that manufacturers and importers communicate enough information along the supply chain to allow safe use of their chemical substances and mixtures.

A Safety Data Sheet consists of 16 specific points which include information on the properties of the chemical substance (or mixture), its hazards and instructions for handling, disposal and transport and also first-aid, fire-fighting and exposure control measures. This information can be found either in the main body of the SDS or in the annexed exposure scenarios (where applicable).

Chemicals placed on the Cyprus market must be accompanied by a SDS in Greek language.

The Emergency Telephone Number of the Cyprus Poison Center which should be included in section 1.4 of the SDS is 1401 (working hours 24 hr/24hr, 7 days a week)

A supplier needs to provide a safety data sheet in the following cases:
  • A chemical substance or mixture classified as hazardous according to CLP.
  • A substance that is Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) or very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative (vPvB), as defined in REACH (Annex XIII), or
  • A substance is included in the candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

Additionally, SDS are required for certain chemical mixtures which are not classified as hazardous but contain hazardous substances or substances for which Community Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) are set.

More information on the SDS can be found in the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) website here.

Exposure Scenarios

Each Exposure Scenario includes the following four sections:

1. Title
2. Conditions of use affecting exposure
3. Exposure estimation
4. Guidance to downstream users to evaluate if their use is within the boundaries of the exposure scenario

For better use of all the available information in relation to the safe use of chemicals ECHA prepared the following interactive map.
