2/8/2018 - Public consultation on draft ICNIRP guidelines

Since 11 July 2018, the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has announced that the draft guidelines on the limitation of exposure to electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields (100 kHz to 300 GHz) are open for public consultation. The deadline for submission of comments is 9 October 2018. More information is available on the ICNIRP's website.



9/7/2018 – IAEA Workshop on "Arrangements for the Termination of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency", Nicosia, Cyprus, 25-28 June 2018

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection has hosted and co-organized in Cyprus with the Incident and Emergency Center (IEC) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a workshop titled "Regional Workshop on Arrangements for the Termination of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency". The meeting has been held in Nicosia, in the period 25-28 June 2018 and about 30 experts from European countries involved in the field of nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response have participated to that. 31/05/2018 - Mission of IAEA officials in Cyprus to prepare Country Program Framework

In the period 2-4 May 2018, the Radiation Control and Inspection Service hosted a delegation of officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Cyprus. The purpose of the presence of IAEA officers in Cyprus was the cooperation and technical support to the competent authority on Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety of Cyprus for the preparation and submission of a document titled “Country Program Framework”. This document will outline the national priorities of the competent authority in the field of radiation protection and nuclear / radiological safety and security, in order to be supported by programmes of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Department. 30/05/2018 – Formal request to the IAEA for an ARTEMIS peer review in Cyprus in 2020

On 22 May 2018, a brief ceremony was held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, in which the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr. Marios Ieronymides handed over to Mr. Juan Carlos Lentijo, Deputy Director General of the IAEA and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Protection of the IAEA, a formal letter / request from the competent authority of Cyprus for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety to conduct an ARTEMIS peer review in Cyprus in 2020. The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection participated in the 6th Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. 13/05/2018 - IAEA Workshop on Conditioning and Consolidation of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) Inventories, Nicosia, 7-11 May 2018

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection hosted and co-organized with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a workshop in Nicosia, from 7 to 11 May 2018, titled "Meeting on Conditioning and Consolidation of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) Inventories". The meeting was part of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Interregional Project INT9182 "Sustaining Cradle-to-Grave Control of Radioactive Sources" and aimed at providing the Member States participating in the Program with an overview of the tools, techniques and procedures for conditioning and the consolidation of the DSRS Inventories. 12/04/2018 - RICS/DLI launches a website on Measurements of Radioactivity in the Atmosphere of Cyprus

The Department of Labour Inspection of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance announces the launch of the Radiation Control and Inspection Service's specialized website, which provides real-time information on radioactivity measurements in the atmosphere of Cyprus.

The website is available in Greek and English and provides the user with the capability to graphically display the available data by measurement factor and per measurement station.

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection hosts and co-organizes with the Incident and Emergency Center (IEC) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a workshop titled "Regional Workshop on Arrangements for the Termination of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency". 29/03/2018 - The European Atlas of Natural Radiation now includes radon indoors measurements from Cyprus

In March 2018, the European Commission has posted on its REMAP website, on an interactive map, indoor radon concentration measurements from Cyprus. The measurements concern the four cities of Cyprus, where most of the population lives. In the future, measurements will be available for the rest of Cyprus.

14/03/2018 – ΙΑΕΑ Workshop “Regional Meeting to discuss Decommissioning Plans in Member States: Status, Gaps and Perspectives”, Nicosia, Cyprus, 5-9 March 2018

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service hosted and co-organised with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a workshop titled "Regional Meeting to Decommissioning Plans in Member States: Status, Gaps and Perspectives". The workshop, which was organised in the framework of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Project RER/9/146 "Enhancing Capacities in Member States for the Planning and Implementation of Decommissioning Projects", was held in Lefkosia, from 5 to 9 March 2018, and gathered together about 40 experts in the field of decommissioning of small medical, industrial and research facilities from Europe and South Eastern Asia. 14/03/2018 – Five-day first responders training programme in the framework of the National Radiation Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan ELECTRA, Lefkosia, 12-16 March 2018

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service (RICS) of the Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) organizes, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, in 12-16 March 2018, at the Cyprus Academy of Public Administration in Lefkosia, a five-day educational programme aiming at members of the First Response Services of the Republic in the event of a nuclear or radiological accident or other incident. The programme is part of a series of education and training activities implemented by RICS/DLI for the services involved in the radiation emergency response mechanism under the Republic's National Action Plan ELECTRA. 14/03/2018 – ConvEx-2a (2018) exercise of the International Atomic Energy Agency on 8 March 2018

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service (RICS) of the Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) participated on 8 March 2018 in an international emergency preparedness and response exercise in the event of a nuclear or radiological accident coded ConvEx-2a (2018) and organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The scenario of the exercise provided for a response to an incident involving a radioactive contamination detection in a container ship in Limassol port, followed by a fire and an explosion upon disembarkation of the occupants on board.

Taking part in such exercises contributes to improving preparedness for nuclear or radiological accidents and allows control and assessment of technical and organizational measures in the country to address these situations more fully.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has posted on its website and puts into consultation with Member States the draft publication entitled:

Preparation, Conduct and Evaluation of Exercises for Detection and Response to Acts Involving Nuclear and Other Radioactive Material Out of Regulatory Control (NST050)

The deadline for submission of comments is May 14, 2018. Interested parties are kindly requested to submit any comments to the Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection in order to be officially forwarded to IAEA [1], [2].
