Ignition and explosion are the main risks associated with gas leakage. LPG in gaseous form is heavier than air and in case of leakage settles and accumulates at the lowest point in space, such as cellars, underground, underfloor channels, sewers, under raised floors, etc. When a spark is induced, LPG mixed with air, ignites quickly and violently (explodes) with disastrous consequences for human lives and property. Also, although the gas is not toxic if inhaled in large quantities can cause suffocation.

Furthermore, due to rapid volatilisation and the consequent drop in temperature, the gas may cause burns if it comes into contact with human skin for this reason special gloves should be worn by personnel when handling LPG at depot or refill stations. LPG is chemically reactive and cause deterioration of natural rubber and certain plastics. For this reason, flexible hoses for gas-consuming appliances should be designed specifically for this purpose, like any equipment used in gas installations.
