Transformation of Nea Eleousa into a Day Care Centre
Nea Eleousa was a State Institution which had been operating since 1977 on a 24 hour basis and provided care to people with severe mental disabilities and multiple disabilities. The Social Welfare Services started the deinstitutionalization of the residents of Nea Eleousa in 1996 and the remaining six residents of Nea Eleousa were accommodated into a House within the Community in January 2015.
Nea Eleousa is going to become a Day Care Centre called “Irida” and will operate on a daily basis. The building has been renovated and modernized equipment will be installed shortly to accommodate the needs of the target group. A percentage of 59.42 is allocated to Cyprus by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2009-2014 and a percentage of 40.58 is provided by the Social Welfare Services through the national budget.
The Project was along the lines of the policy of the Cyprus Government for the disabled people included in the Operational Programme “Sustainable Development and Competitiveness 2007-2013”, which aimed at ensuring their rights and equal opportunities in participating in the island’s economic and social life, as well as their deinstitutionalisation and the promotion of their independent living.
The implementation of this Project is along the lines of the policy followed by the Social Welfare Services which aims to constantly upgrade the services provided to people with disabilities who reside in structures owned by the State. Currently, different kinds of programmes are under development, so that these people can earn the right to be socially included and rehabilitated, just like all the other citizens.
