Protection of unaccompanied persons under the age of 18

A number of under-age individuals who are neither accompanied by their parents nor by their legal guardian arrive every year in Cyprus.

Unaccompanied individuals may apply for political asylum should they have reasons to believe that their lives are in danger in their home country due to persecution, violation of their human rights or outbreak of war. They can be victims of human trafficking for sexual or any other abuse, or running away from their abusers.

Upon their arrival in Cyprus, authorities may track them down or they may seek help themselves. According to the Refugees Law, the Director of the Social Welfare Services must act as the guardian of the under-age unaccompanied person who seeks political asylum in Cyprus and acts on his/her behalf.

In cases where the unaccompanied person does not seek political asylum he/she is considered as an under-age individual in need of protection and care. The Social Welfare Services make all the necessary arrangements so he/she is protected and cared for.
