Community Organisation and Development

The programme aims towards the organisation and development of the communities, organised groups and voluntary organisations. It also promotes the institution of Community Welfare Councils on a local, regional and national level.

Community Welfare Councils and non governmental organisations which, run social welfare programmes and services, receive technical and financial assistance through the Grants in Aid Scheme.

Programmes/Services which can benefit from the Grants in Aid Scheme are:

  • Day-care nurseries for pre-school age children in rural and urban areas.
  • After School Day Care Centres for school age children providing protection and social activities to children after the end of each school day and during school holidays.
  • Day care centres for old people and people with disabilities.
  • Programmes that support other groups of people i.e. victims of violence, people who suffer from cancer or AIDS, e.t.c..

All programmes aim to support the family unit. Families where both parents are employed, programmes enable them to successfully reconcile family and working life.

According to the relevant legislation, the Social Welfare Services are responsible for the registration and supervision of private and community day care centres and child minders who look after pre-school age children at their own premises.

  • Programmes that support particular groups of the population.
