The European Social Charter was signed in 1961 and it one of the Council of Europe's treaties that protects human rights.
The Council of Europe is a political organisation founded in 1949 which aims at guaranteeing democracy, human rights and the rule of Law. All European States that are prepared to respect the Council's principles may become members, with the existing number of Member States amounting to 43.
The European Social Charter guarantees social and economic human rights. The Charter was extended by the addition of three Protocols in 1988, 1991, and 1995.
In 1996 the revised Social Charter was opened for signature, and entered into force on 1 July 1999, and will progressively replace the first Charter.
The Republic of Cyprus signed the Revised Social Charter on the 3rd of May 1996. The Charter was then ratified on the 27th of September 2000 and entered into force on the 1st of November 2000.
Specifically, the Department of Labour Relations is the competent authority responsible for the enforcement of the provisions (in part or wholly) of Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28 and 29 of the Revised Social Charter.
