Between the 26th and the 27th of June 2006, our Department was represented in a workshop of the European Foundation for the Improvement of the Living and Working Conditions on the subject of "Social Dialogue Capacity Building at Sectoral and Company Level" that took place in Sofia, Bulgaria. The Department was represented by Mr. Xenios Mamas, Labour Relations Officer.
The workshop is part of a project of the European Foundation that aims to help the new member-states of the EU and the 4 candidate countries (Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Turkey) to develop social dialogue at sectoral and company level. Participants included national researchers of the European Foundation and representatives of the social partners from each country. For Cyprus, the researchers were represented by Evangelia Soumeli of I.N.E.K-P.E.O, while the employer organisations were represented by Mr. Herodotos Herodotou and Ioannis Ioannides of O.E.B and the trade unions by Mr. Andreas Poulis of S.E.K.
At the workshop, the researchers presented their reports on sectoral and company level social dialogue for each country. These reports describe concisely the way of conducting social dialogue in each country, giving particular reference to the existing mechanisms of social dialogue, in the means for resolving labour disputes, in the organisations that participate in the social dialogue and in the role and capabilities of each organisation.
These reports were discussed and the representatives of each country made recommendations with regard to the content of final reports. Also, at the end of the workshop, the participants made suggestions for the future development of social dialogue in each country.
More details about the workshop can be found at the webpage of European Foundation for the Improvement of the Living and Working Conditions.
