Shops’ Operating Hours for Christmas





The Laws that Regulate the Operation of Shops and the Employment Terms of their Employees (Law 155(I) of 2006 and 68(I) of 2007)

1. Shop hours

Labour Relations Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance notifies all interested parties that the closing hours for the Christmas period (01/12 to 31/12) will be the following:

- Monday up to Sunday: up to 8 p.m.
- 24/12 and 31/12: up to 6 p.m.
- 25/12 and 26/12: closed


2. Employees’ working hours

The Labour Relations Department reminds all concerned shopkeepers that according to the existing Legislation, the extended shop hours during the Christmas period cannot be interpreted or applied in such a way that will affect the rights of their employees provided for by Labour Legislation. Thus, normal daily working hours are set to 8 and weekly are set to 38. Overtime work is allowed, given that the employee consents, but it cannot be more than 2 hours daily or 8 weekly.

With regards to overtime compensation, the Law provides that overtime work during afternoon and morning offs and Sundays should be compenstated with no less than the rate 1:2 and 1:1,5 for the rest of the weekdays
