The normal working hours of shop employees must not exceed 38 hours weekly and 8 hours daily. Rest periods (breaks) and overtime are not included in the normal working hours. Shop employees, may work a maximum of 2 hours overtime daily and up to 8 hours weekly.


Overtime hours worked are compensated as follows:

  • · Afternoon or mornings off: each working hour is compensated as two working hours (1:2).
  • · Public holidays: each working hour is compensated as two working hours (1:2).
  • · Other days: each working hour is compensated as one and a half working hour (1:1,5).
It is noted that shops that choose to be open 7 days per week must offer their employees two (2) 24-hour weekly rest periods (days off) and one (1) morning or afternoon off. Every employee who works on Sundays, must be given every two weeks a Sunday off. In addition, every employee must be given every two weeks an afternoon off on Saturday.

As regards shops that operate 6 days per week, they must offer their employees one (1) 24-hour weekly rest period (day off) and three (3) mornings or afternoons off. Every employee must be given every two weeks an afternoon off on Saturday.

A part-time shop employee who has an agreement to work for example 30 hours per week and must work for more hours but less than 38 hours, will be compensated 1:1 for the extra work. In case he/she has to work more than 38 hours, then the extra hours after completing 38 hours will be compensated as stated in the Law.
