11/09/2019 - New forms for notification and application for authorisation (through registration or licensing) by the Radiation Inspection and Control Service

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection announces that from 11.9.2019 only the new forms for the notification of a practice or application for authorisation through registration or licensing for a practice will be accepted for processing. The new forms have been uploaded to the "Forms and Applications" section.



08/02/2019 - IAEA Workshop on "Medical Preparedness and Response in case of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency", Nicosia, Cyprus, 6-10 May 2019

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection hosts and co-organises with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a workshop titled "Medical Preparedness and Response in case of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency". The meeting will be held in Nicosia in the period 6-10 May 2019 and will be attended by about 40 experts in the field of medical preparedness and response in radiation emergencies from European countries. 07/02/2019 - ICRP Publication No. 126 "Radiological Protection against Radon Exposure" goes public

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has made public its Publication No. 126 on "Radiological Protection against Radon Exposure". This is the third recent publication made available to the public for free, following ICRP Publication No. 103 on "the 2007 Recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection" and No. 119 "Compendium of Dose Coefficients based on ICRP Publication 60". 22/01/2019 - IAEA Workshop on "Regional Workshop on Lessons Learned in Applying the IAEA General Safety Requirements Part 3", Nicosia, Cyprus, 18-22 March 2019

The Radiation Inspection and Control Service of the Department of Labour Inspection hosts and co-organises with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) a workshop titled "Regional Workshop on Lessons Learned in Applying the IAEA General Safety Requirements Part 3". The meeting will be held in Nicosia in the period 18-22 March 2019 and will be attended by about 60 experts in the field of radiation safety and protection from European countries. The output from the workshop will be used as one of the inputs to the International Conference on Radiation Safety to be held from 9 to 13 November 2020 in Vienna. Read more.



07/01/2019 – New legislation on Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety and Security

New legislation on Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety and Security has been published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of 21.12.2018 and 28.12.2018, in compliance with the Directive 2013/59/Euratom laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation.

This legislation also maintains harmonised provisions in relation to earlier Directives, such as the Directive 2006/117/Euratom on the supervision and control of shipments of radioactive waste and spent fuel and the Directives 2009/71/Euratom and 2014/87/Euratom establishing a Community framework for the nuclear safety of nuclear installations.

The new legislation consists of:

  1. the Protection against Ionising Radiation and Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security Law of 2018 [L. 164(I)/2018], and
  2. the Protection against Ionising Radiation and Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (Basic Safety Standards for the Protection against the Dangers Arising from Exposure to Ionising Radiation) Regulations of 2018 (R.A.A. 374/2018).

By the entry into force of the new legislation on 21 and 28 December 2018, respectively, the following legislative instruments were repealed:

  1. The Protection from Ionising Radiation Law of 2002 (L. 115/(Ι)/2002);
  2. The Protection from Ionising Radiation (Amendment) Law of 2009 (L. 8(Ι)/2009);
  3. The Protection from Ionising Radiation and Nuclear Safety (Amendment) Law of 2011 (L. 127(Ι)/2011); and
  4. Τhe Protection from Ionising Radiation and Nuclear Safety (Amendment) Law of 2017 (L. 122(I)/2017).

Regulatory Administrative Acts
  1. The Protection from Ionising Radiation (Basic Principles) Regulations of 2002 (R.A.A. 494/2002);
  2. The Protection from Ionising Radiation (Informing the Public about Measures to be applied in Case of Emergency) Regulations of 2002 (R.A.A. 495/2002);
  3. The Protection from Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations of 2002 (R.A.A. 497/2002);
  4. The Protection from Ionising Radiation Notification of 2004 (R.A.A. 591/2004);
  5. The Protection from Ionising Radiation Notification of 2004 (R.A.A. 592/2004); and
  6. The Protection from Ionising Radiation (Control of High-Activity Sealed Radioactive Sources and Orphan Sources) Regulations of 2006 (R.A.A. 30/2006).
