Transportation of radioactive material

The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance (MLWSI), acting through the Radiation Inspection and Control Service (RICS) of the Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) is the competent authority in Cyprus for the transportation of radioactive materials (dangerous goods of Class 7) within, to, or from the Republic. The existing legislation on radiation protection and nuclear safety is in line with the European Acquis and the relevant international standards, to ensure that all such transportation comply with national and European legislation and international standards.

The transport of radioactive materials and related installations are subject to regulatory control for the purposes of radiation protection and radiological or nuclear safety and security, through notification or authorisation and appropriate inspections and, where necessary, enforcement actions, as defined in the Protection from Ionising Radiation and Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (Specifications for practices, procedures and regulatory control requirements relating to the notification or granting authorisation through registration or licensing) Notification of 2019 (R.A.A. 153/2019). The Protection from Ionising Radiation and Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (Safety and Security Standards regarding Transport of Radioactive Materials) Notification of 2021 (R.A.A. 154/2021) entered into force on 16.4.2021. The Notification determines safety and security standards regarding the transport of radioactive materials.
