Public Information Notice on the Subject of Air Quality - Mobile phone application
|The Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare, and Social Insurance, acting as the Competent Authority for Air Quality issues, operates a network of air quality monitoring stations in various locations throughout Cyprus. Under the legislation on air quality, the monitoring stations are classified according to their location as Traffic Stations (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Pafos), as Residential Stations (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca), as Industrial Stations (Zygi, Mari), and as Background Stations (Ayia Marina Xyliatou, Inia, Cavo Greco, Troodos).|
The pollutant concentrations at the abovementioned stations, which include sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (ΝΟ, ΝΟ2 και ΝΟx), ozone (Ο3), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2,5), and benzene, are measured in real-time and are available to the public through a dedicated website maintained by DLI for Air Quality, www.airquality.gov.cy.
Within its competence, DLI has developed a mobile phone application for Android devices to inform workers, vulnerable groups of population, the public, visitors, and other involved or interested parties of the pollution levels in real-time. Through the application, any interested party may access information on air quality, including the pollution level colors on the map of Cyprus, as well as the concentration of pollutants at each monitoring station. Development of an application for Apple devices running iOS is also planned, in an effort to reach a larger percentage of the population.
It is noted that the information is presented likewise in the application as it is on the current dedicated DLI website on Air Quality, www.airquality.gov.cy.
